Milligan School, 2500 Braddock Avenue

Today I let my exhausted Beagle hitched a ride. He's a good little commuter.

We headed down Braddock Avenue into Swissvale to visit an early building, the Milligan School (formerly Hawkins School) from 1904. It has since been converted into "Milligan Manor" apartments, which accept Section 8 vouchers.

The school was designed to fulfill the vision of the Board of the Swissvale Borough School District, and the two-story brick building with eight rooms (including center pavilion) has been described as his most conventional design of Scheibler's career.

You can see that the windows have been replaced or filled in.

Ok, Milligan School. Check!

  1. I am always pleased to find an old school building that has been repurposed and will survive for decades more. This is a solid and very stately red brick school building that now functions as an apartment building. Sustainable architecture that would make Scheibler proud! I wonder what they look like inside?
